Ember Saturday of Advent 2019

Today is Ember Saturday in Advent.

Formally, in Rome, today’s ordinations were the most solemn of all those carried out during the year. It is possible that for several ages this was the only time for conferring Orders in Rome.

In 1962, Ember Saturdays were days of partial abstinence and fasting.

Here the Bishop imposes hands upon the Deacon candidate for the Priesthood. This is the form of the Sacrament.
Here a newly ordained Priest receives the chalice, filled with wine and a little water, paten, and host. The Priest’s hands have been anointed with the Oil of the Catechisms and wrapped with the manutergium to catch any excess oil.
