In the sacristy of St. Mary’s is a plaque documenting the erection of the Stations of the Cross at St. Mary’s. According to the plaque, on February 13, 1891, Matthew Harkins, Bishop of Providence, delegated the erection and blessings of the Stations to Fr. Thomas P. Grace, the third Pastor of St. Mary’s. At that time, without special delegation, only members of the Order of Friars Minor (the Franciscans) could erect and bless Stations of the Cross. Fr. Grace erected the Stations a few days later on February 20, 1891.
