Laws of Abstinence and Fast

• Current laws of days of Penance (Lent and Fridays outside of Lent) apply to all the faithful. The obligation to do penance on Fridays is lifted on days which rank as a solemnity in the Ordinary Form.
• Current laws of days of Abstinence (Ash Wednesday and Fridays of Lent) obligate abstention from flesh meat for those 14 years old and older.
• Current laws of days of Fast (Ash Wednesday and Good Friday) oblige those between 18 and 59 inclusive to one full meal and two smaller meals which, when combined, are less than the full meal.

• 1962 laws of days of Complete Abstinence (all Fridays of the year, Ash Wednesday, Holy Saturday, and the Vigil of Christmas) obligated all 7 years old or older. This abstinence was dispensed on Holy Days of Obligation.
• 1962 laws of days of Partial Abstinence (all the days of Lent, the Ember Days of Wednesday and Saturday, and the Vigils of Pentecost and the Assumption) obligated abstinence from meat and soup/gravy made from meat except once-a-day at the principal meal for those 7 years old or older. This abstinence was dispensed on Holy Days of Obligation. 
• 1962 laws days of Fast (days of Lent starting on Ash Wednesday, Ember Days, and the Vigils of Christmas, Pentecost, and the Assumption) obliged those between 21 and 59 inclusive to one full meal and two smaller meals which, when combined, are less than the full meal.
