Grades 7-9 or High School
Confirmation is basically a two-year program but spans three years. Children who follow the traditional sequence of our program from an early age will begin Year 1 in grade 7. Year 2 carries through grade 8. Confirmation is received in the month of November of grade 9.
However, teenagers in high school frequently prepare for the sacrament in a variety of years from grades 9 through 12. Age and grade are flexible for this sacrament, as it is for any of the prerequisite sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, and First Communion. If a high school student is 18 years of age or a senior, the director may refer him/her to the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (go to RCIA). The Church of St. Mary accepts children for preparation in any of the sacraments at any time.

STUDENTS ATTENDING CATHOLIC SCHOOLS:
Most Catholic schools do not prepare students for the sacraments. The reason is that students belong to two communities. The school is their educational community. The parish is their sacramental and worship community. However, since students attending Catholic schools have daily religious education, they are only required to attend our program in the second year of preparation where the sacrament itself is the focus of instruction. Additionally, the young people have the opportunity to meet their peers and other adults, become involved in parish life, and begin to feel part of their worship community.
