Protocol for Eucharistic Ministers

Liturgy is the heart of the St. Mary worship experience. Liturgical ministers serve in various capacities to facilitate a peaceful, prayerful and inspirational experience for all who worship here.   All Liturgical ministers are called to be an example of: respect, honor and reverence throughout the mass.   In addition, general appearance, apparel, and accessories worn during the liturgy should reflect the dignity of the role of one called upon to assist in the sacred liturgy.

All ministers should arrive at church at least 15 to 20 minutes prior to start of Mass and PRINT name on Sacristan’s Sign-In Sheet located in the Work Sacristy.

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion process in and sit with the congregation in pews near the sanctuary.   The Presider will prepare the altar for the Consecration.

After the prayer “Lord, I am not worthy…” ministers approach and bow to the altar together while the Presider is taking Communion. Eucharistic Ministers then receive Holy Communion.  Chalice Ministers should step forward as the Presider approaches with the Chalices.

After distributing Communion, Precious Blood should be consumed at side shelf.  If unable to consume it all, leave it on the altar and Presider will consume it.  The Presider or Deacon will fold cloths and assemble vessels at the right side of the altar, and Bread Minister will remove these to side table.  While EM’s are at the side table, use water in the cruet to purify empty Chalices and consume water. Use water to purify Host plate(s) and consume the water. This should be done before the final blessing.  All ministers then bow to the altar together and return to pews.

After Mass, return all vessels to the work sacristy; wash them, dry them, and leave them for the sacristan to put away.
